Agile Data Warehousing: Using Oracle Data Modeler to Build a Virtualized ODS
Kent Graziano, Snowflake Computing

At a past client, in order to meet timelines to fulfill urgent, unmet reporting needs, I found it necessary to build a virtualized Operational Data Store as the first phase of a new Data Vault 2.0 project. This allowed me to deliver new objects quickly and incrementally to the report developer so we could quickly show the business users their data. In order to limit the need for refactoring in later stages of the data warehouse development, I chose to build this virtualization layer on top of a Type 2 persistent staging layer. All of this was done using Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler (SDDM) against (gasp!) an MS SQL Server Database. In this talk, I will show you the architecture for this approach, the rationale, and then the tricks I used in SDDM to build all the stage tables and views very quickly. In the end, you will see actual SQL code for a virtual ODS that can easily be translated to an Oracle Database.

  • Learn a data warehouse architecture that can be implemented incrementally and in layer.
  • Learn what is a Virtual ODS and how it can help you be Agile.
  • How to quickly build pattern-based stage tables in SDDM.
  • How to build complex, pattern-based views in SDDM.
  • Tips on how to use analytic functions to create virtual columns.
  • See examples of how to embed change data capture into a view-based loading architecture.

All About EPMA: From Setup to Tips and Tricks
Deanna Sunde, Key Performance Ideas

The classic method of building Essbase, Hyperion Planning, and Hyperion Financial Management (HFM) applications can be unwieldly. How is your process for building hierarchies? Is it time-consuming and difficult to maintain? Enterprise Performance Management Architect (EPMA) is an innovative tool, included in the Oracle EPM suite, designed to ease the burden of managing data and metadata. Reasons for using EPMA vs. Classic mode will be discussed, along with pros, cons, and design considerations. EPMA will be demonstrated including the shared library; local library along with how to share dimensions across HFM, Planning, Essbase BSO, and Essbase ASO applications; what extra setup is needed to support these applications; and how to exclude portions of a dimension. Also covered will be how to create a flat file and a profile, how to load the metadata, how to use the EPMA batch utility, and how to override properties.

Avoiding FDMEE OpenBatch Pitfalls with Custom Script
Pete Petersen, CheckPoint Consulting

Have you come across problematic issues while using FDMEE to automate loads via OpenBatch and encountered the issue of the “openbatch” directory filling up with archive directories? There are some simple steps to take to stay organized. In this webinar, we will walk through:

  • Configuring the Batch Definition for running OpenBatch
  • Utilizing a custom script to accomplish:
  1. Moving archive directories to appropriate application directories
  2. Renaming archive directories to include date and time
  3. Deleting empty directories to avoid “clogging” the openbatch directory

We will walk through the default OpenBatch process to show the “out-of-the-box” functionality as well as the process with the custom script implemented.

2017 CodeTalk Series: Internet of Things and Oracle Database
Blaine Carter, Oracle Corporation, and Anton Nielsen, C2 Consulting

The Code Talk Series is Co-sponsored by ODTUG and IOUG

To say we live in an increasingly connected world is to state the obvious – and to entice developers to wonder how they can connect their devices to the Internet. Of course, that immediately begs the question of what to do with all the data gathered. We kick off the CodeTalk 2017 series with an interview with Anton Nielsen, longtime explorer of leading-edge technologies in and around Oracle Database. He’s got lots to say about the IoT, and Blaine Carter, Oracle Developer Advocate for Open Source, will make sure you hear all about it.

FDMEE /PBCS REST API: Taking Your Hybrid Integration to the Next Level
Francisco Amores, Infratects

Hybrid integrations are the best approach to integrate your on-premise and cloud-based applications. Each cloud service provides a REST API that we can use to perform multiple tasks, such as importing/exporting metadata and running business rules.

In this webinar, we will show how to load HFM exchange rates from an HFM on-premise application into a PBCS application using FDMEE on-premise and PBCS REST API.
