Volunteering and ODTUG

What is volunteering? One definition could be:

Volunteering is the giving of time and energy for the benefit of society, the community, the individual, the environment or people outside one’s immediate family. It is undertaken freely and by choice, without concern for financial gain.

ODTUG is a volunteer driven organization.  Volunteers are the heart and soul of the organization.  The Board of Directors are volunteers.  ODTUG has volunteers that work on the our Technical Journal, including authors and our current Editor-in-Chief, Karen Cannell.  Our main conference, Kaleidoscope, relies on many volunteers, including room ambassadors, presenters, registration volunteers, and many others.  We have SIG leaders for our Special Interest Groups, and these are all volunteers.  There are many committees that help ODTUG operate, and these committees rely upon volunteers as well. ODTUG is always looking for good volunteers.  Volunteers bring fresh ideas, energy and enthusiasm.

ODTUG has a new Volunteer Coordinator, Monty Latiolais.  Monty has become very involved as a volunteer for ODTUG.  He is interested in helping us place volunteers in positions that are interesting to the volunteer, and in positions that will help strengthen ODTUG as an organization.  Please visit the ODTUG web site for more information.  If you’re interested, we have a volunteer application for you to fill out.

There are two people that I can directly credit with getting me involved with ODTUG.  Kent Graziano, a past president of ODTUG, worked as a consultant on a project with my company.  He introduced ODTUG to me, and I have been hooked ever since.  Maggie Tompkins, former Board member and former Editor-in-Chief of the Technical Journal, encouraged me to step up and volunteer for ODTUG, and doing so has been one of the best decisions I have ever made.

Volunteering for any organization can be very rewarding.  Become a volunteer.  There are many worthy organizations out there.  Maybe your church, your child’s school, a local library, a local hospital, if not your favorite user group.

You can help make a difference!
