After a 22-year “vacation,” I returned to Oracle Corporation in March 2014 (I ended my first stint as an employee in 1992). I am doing things I never expected to be doing, such as putting together a team of evangelists to help our users fully leverage Oracle Database as an application development platform [ http://stevenfeuersteinonplsql.blogspot.com/2014/07/hiring-for-new-team-oracle-database.html]. This means that, as of Friday, October 10, when the first member of my team started, I am a manager - something I have worked hard to avoid all my professional career.
But I also continue to be a domain expert in Oracle PL/SQL, and I am very eager to transfer that expertise to PL/SQL developers. So I started a monthly webcast series, co-sponsored by Oracle Technology Network and ODTUG: The 2014 PL/SQL by Feuerstein Webinar Series.
The first three webinars, hosted by Oracle, covered best practices for PL/SQL development, including how and when to write SQL in PL/SQL, how to write PL/SQL code you can actually read (and maintain), and how to “bulletproof” your PL/SQL program units.
The next three webinars, hosted by ODTUG, shift the focus to performance. We will start on October 16 with an in-depth look at the powerful function result cache feature introduced in 11.1. On November 13, the focus shifts to bulk processing (BULK COLLECT and FORALL). We finish on December 11 with a fast-paced review of 10 other top tips for improving performance in PL/SQL.
I hope you can join me for all these presentations. Even if you are an experienced developer, you are likely to pick up a new idea or two. And if you are relatively new to PL/SQL or only use it occasionally, these three hours of presentations will give you a solid orientation to how you can speed up your PL/SQL code.
