With Oracle Application Express 4.0 to be released later this year (maybe sometime around the end of June??), who better to talk to than David. One of my personal experiences with David happened at ODTUG Kaleidoscope 2008 in New Orleans, where I was privileged enough to be the conference chair. Being that I was so busy at the conference, I missed David’s presentation about the Forms Conversion utility that was being worked on at the time. I caught David in the hallway, asked about the utility, and David proceeded to spend 45 minutes with me at a table in the break area explaining and demonstrating the utility. David is always helpful, and willing to talk to anyone about Oracle Application Express.
Look for David to be a popular person in Washington DC when Kaleidoscope rolls around.
Here’s my interview with David:
MR: Which presentation of yours is a “can’t miss” session that Kaleidoscope attendees should plan on attending, and why?
DP: “This year the APEX Development Team has five presentations and they are all on APEX 4.0 Features. If you really want to know about these features what better way to learn than from those actually developing the features.”
MR: Who else should Kaleidoscope attendees plan on seeing a session from, and why?
DP: “If I could only pick one other session it would have to be “Using Collections in APEX: The Definitive Intro” by Raj Mattamal. If you have never seen Raj present than that is reason in itself as he is one of the most engaging presenters period. Secondly, I think collections are an exceedingly powerful component of APEX and one every APEX developer should know how and when to use.”
MR: What differentiates Kaleidoscope as a conference from other conferences out there?
DP: “From an APEX perspective, Kaleidoscope is THE premier conference. With over 40 sessions, including 5 hands-on labs, there is something for every APEX developer. Not to mention last year there were over 200 of your fellow APEX developers in attendance many of whose names you recognize from the APEX Blogs and APEX OTN Forum.”
MR: If you’ve been to Washington before, can you recommend one thing that a first time visitor should take advantage of while visiting during Kaleidoscope?
DP: “I plan on trying to get to the Smithsonian this year.”
MR: Can you tell us what your best memory is from a Kaleidoscope conference that you’ve attended previously?
DP: “Catching up with old friends and meeting so many new people and learning all the new and exciting ways they have been using APEX to solve their business issues. My best memory from Monterrey was seeing so many people at the APEX dinner, many of whom wearing the APEX / SQL Developer t-shirts.”
MR: If you are comfortable in doing so, please give us a quote that we can use in the marketing campaign for Kaleidoscope.
DP: “ODTUG Kaleidoscope continues to be THE premier conference for APEX developers. Once again this year there are over 40 APEX sessions and the best social networking opportunities. Whenever you get that many people together in one place, passionate about the same things as you, it is sure to be worthwhile.”
