The Arrangement of the Screens: Introduction to Layout in ADF Faces

Subtopic: Tips and Techniques

Traditionally, the ability to position content on a web page has been severely limited by the available features of HTML. Applying the concept of "Web of Things," these limitations compound with each new display device type that needs an application's support. In the past, to construct application pages with complex layouts, developers maximized the alignment, spacing, and padding properties of HTML tag elements. They also employed additions to the HTML toolset such as images, JavaScript, and Cascading Style Sheet code. The user-interface component toolsets available now require less work in the internals of squeezing and stretching, and focus more on understanding and using the supplied layout features.

This presentation explores how to implement a layout design using Application Development Framework Faces Rich Client (ADF Faces RC) components. It explains and demonstrates different categories of ADF Faces layout components and their properties that allow the developer to declaratively create a specific layout. It also explains and demonstrates nesting layout components and how this technique could be used to modify the standard tab order. The session ends with some advice about how to approach implemention of a layout design including using resources such as cheat sheets, component guides, and component documentation. The principles in this session apply to web and mobile development.
