Virtual layers running as the first layer on top of the hardware does provide a way to run various softwares and test them out. While this is not recommended in production, it can be used as a first step to trying out patches and upgrades. We are an Oracle Middleware shop running Beehive and Oracle Portal 11G with OID/SSO, which we have replicated on 2 different virtualization vendor products namely VMware and Oracle VM. We are currently using this to do all our pre-production testing.
