Many database developers are familiar with the basic SOUNDEX function used to provide basic similarity matching for names. In this presentation, we'll go beyond SOUNDEX to examine more advanced approaches for string and name matching, including details about the UTL_MATCH built-in package. We'll also explore implementations of the NYSIIS, MetaPhone and Caverphone phonetic matching algorithms in SQL and PL/SQL. Finally we'll explore how combinations of these techniques can be used for data cleansing in large scale environments.
