Essbase Partitioning Basics and Advanced Mapping Techniques
Topic: Essbase
Owner: Kevin Cox
Date: 2013-07-15
Subtopic: Tips and Techniques

The presentation will begin with introductory information about Essbase partitioning (what is it, why use them, how they work, different types, etc.) Actual examples will be presented along with step by step instructions on defining both replicated and transparent partitions on BSO cubes. Using EAS, each step of partition development will be covered. Using actual partition examples that presenter created, more advanced techniques will be introduced including mapping techniques for cubes with different member names and dimensionality. Examples will be shown on defining advanced source and target areas along with specific member mapping examples. Primary example will illustrate how presenter used partitions to link 2 native Essbase cubes containing actuals data with up to 3 different Planning cubes with different dimensionality containing various forecasts and plans to create one single reporting cube visible to the end user. In this example, techniques will be shown on using member UDA's to control partitioning of rolling forecast data and how to control mapping of members and/or dimenstions that may exist in one cube, and not the other. Presenter will also introduce common errors that occur when creating partitions and how those are corrected. Content of the presentation will be oriented to beginner Essbase administrators, but intermediate users who may be new to partioning may also benefit. If an Essbase Beginner tract is offered, this presentation may fit into that category.
