Chris Saxon, Oracle Corporation

In the past fifty years data storage has transformed from punched cards that could barely hold 80 characters to cloud-based servers that count storage units in terabytes. This session will chart the history of data storage, from the birth of the relational model in the '70s to the rise of NoSQL solutions in the 2000s and the subsequent return to SQL in the 2010s. Throughout this time, relational databases have continued to evolve. A key enhancement is adding support for NoSQL style JSON storage. This session will finish with a demo of "SQL magic," showing how you can combine the best of flexible JSON storage with SQL's query capabilities, giving guidelines to help developers work effectively with data in the modern era.
