When it comes to EPM planning, companies have traditionally taken a "more is better" approach regarding the level of detail included. Operating under the guiding principle that you can't manage what you can't measure has caused departments to get too mired in the details, leading to time-consuming planning cycles and a history of overspending. Tighter budgets and competition between departments for budget allocation have only exacerbated the inclusion of every possible line item in planning. Driver-based planning is a new approach to EPM planning and focuses only on the actionable drivers of the business, allowing the rest to "just happen." This allows employees to be more nimble, react to market conditions more quickly, and make decisions about factors that are truly under their control.
