You too can be a blockhead! Take a walk with me through the Dense and Sparse settings in BSO Essbase cubes. They are important; they are also relatively easy to understand. Don’t be satisfied with ‘the hour glass’ explanation to dimension ordering - it may help with performance, but it won’t explain why certain calculated values do not derive correctly. If you rely on Essbase or Hyperion Planning for day-to-day reporting, planning, and analysis, but feel like you are in the dark when it comes to how that data actually gets pushed around by calculations then this session is for you. We will start with the Dense and Sparse settings and explain exactly what that means for dimensions assigned those properties. Next we will work through a practical business model in Excel, remodeling it along the way inside of Essbase. The goal is to raise your understanding of Essbase BSO architecture to the point where you can look at calculation scripts and member formulas and have the confidence to modify, or create new calculations.
