Campaign Statement

I’ve just completed my first full year as an appointed ODTUG Board Member while actively filling the Database Community Lead role and managing the TechCeleration portal for authors and related content, which focused on numerous DBA, database, and application development topics.

I also participated in several facets of Kscope21 this past June, including reviewing and selecting database-related content submissions, supervising panel discussions, working with our conference’s sponsors, and even (attempting to!) briefly entertain our members with a techno-comedy session.

My key goals as an elected ODTUG board member:

1.)          I will do everything I can to help make Kscope22 in Grapevine, TX, next June 2022 an exciting, innovative, knowledge-driven, and fun event.

2.)          I will advocate tirelessly for our members and provide to them the best possible content during upcoming webinars and master-class series so we can grow their knowledge in whatever specialty they practice or are seeking to transition to.

3.)          I will leverage my experience as a 30-year private business owner to help ensure ODTUG maintains a strong financial position so that upcoming Kscopes are even more expansive, exciting, and innovative than Kscope22 will surely be.

I respectfully ask for your vote for the ODTUG Board of Directors.

Questions

How would you describe ODTUG in 10 words or less?

Curious membership demanding entertaining yet informative training and knowledge transfer.

What is your motivation for joining the board?

Having finished my first term as an appointed ODTUG board member, this year I’m hoping to move into an elected position to continue my support for what I believe is one of the preeminent Oracle user groups today. I’m especially focused on helping ODTUG maintain its financial health so we can continue to provide our members and event attendees with top-flight education and information in 2022.

What attributes do you feel you would bring to this position?

My deep ties within the Oracle community give me access to valuable product support resources so we can continue to provide excellent and accurate training and knowledge across the spectrum of ODTUG membership. Also, my wide IT experience helps me to understand the day-to-day challenges of being a developer, DBA, team lead, and IT professional. Since I’m a frequent public speaker at OUG events, I understand intimately what my fellow presenters and attendees expect to be presented at in-person and virtual events. Finally, my experience running my own corporation for nearly 30 years will be beneficial for maintaining ODTUG’s financial health.

Do you have a principal goal you would like to achieve as a board member?

We are just beginning to emerge from an extended period of incredible turmoil throughout the world because of the pandemic, and a return to “business as usual” is by no means certain in 2022. My key goal for the coming year is to make Kscope22 next June in Grapevine, TX, a successful, inspirational, fun, and informative in-person event while simultaneously ensuring the public health of our members – granted, a unique set of challenges, but one that our imaginative conference team will adapt to and overcome.

Please describe the traits, qualities, and experiences that qualify you to serve on the ODTUG Board.

I’ve learned a lot over the past year from my ODTUG BoD colleagues about the unique challenges and day-to-day demands of running a complex organization of feisty independent members. Likewise, my experiences as a technology advocate, speaker, and presenter during this time has given me in-depth experience on what it takes for a user-focused organization to make a difference in difficult times. Finally, my prior experience as a pre-sales consultant has exposed me to myriad vendors and sponsors over the years, so I understand their motivations for continuing to contribute to events like Kscope22 as well as our numerous webinars and master class series.

I have established strong relationships with Oracle and the user community. My goal is to establish, present and build more user group events. These events should focus on our industry and geographic locations. I want to empower more companies and more individuals to share their experiences with the user community. We need to collaborate and become a unified force to continue to build and develop Oracle distinction as the market leader.

Campaign Statement

Since I rejoined the Board of Directors a few years ago, a lot of things have happened that no one could have foreseen. The past two years, the pandemic forced ODTUG to act with extreme agility while closely monitoring our financial situation. Switching from a regular in-person conference to a 100% virtual delivery of content to our members is quite a challenge! And in the near future, we have to rethink our position: What should we do in-person and what should we do on-line? Or, is some kind of mix a better approach? So, we're definitely not there yet. Our future will be challenging!

I am convinced ODTUG would really benefit from the experience I have built in recent years. And I’d like to continue!

Apart from our response to the pandemic we have more challenges to address. For instance, what can we do to make our conferences more sustainable? How can we embrace and support local initiatives such as meetups? What does the movement to the cloud mean for our members and attendees and what new challenges and opportunities linger on the horizon?

These kinds of questions need to be addressed by the next board. I would love to be part of that, and I seek your support. Thus, vote for the future. Vote for Roel. http://roelforodtug.com.

Biography

Roel started a long time ago in the era of Oracle RDBMS 5. Since then, he has gained experience in building applications for end users. The past 15 years his focus has been on APEX. Roel has been a speaker for Oracle conferences around the world, including ODTUG's Kscope for more than 10 years.

Next to that, within ODTUG, he acted as the APEX content lead for Kscope14 and Kscope15 and is currently a member of the Board of Directors.

His blog can be read at http://roelhartman.blogspot.com. In June 2009, Roel received an Oracle ACE award; in August 2010 he was appointed as Oracle ACE Director; and since June 2019, he has been an Oracle Groundbreaker Ambassador.

Roel is a co-writer of the Expert Oracle Application Express and Oracle Application Express for Mobile Web Applications books. He is director at APEX Consulting in The Netherlands. You can contact him at roel@apexconsulting.nl.

Questions

How would you describe ODTUG in 10 words or less?

The one and only Oracle user group spanning the whole globe.

What is your motivation for joining the board?

I have served two terms now. The last term was a rollercoaster due to the pandemic. Although we managed to pull ODTUG through it, I think we need some more changes for the organisation to face the new reality where virtual is nowadays more common than ever.

What attributes do you feel you would bring to this position?

A couple years’ experience as an ODTUG Board member - the last few years as Secretary - will give me a jump start. Next to that, my network within the global Oracle eco-system is quite large. That gives me the opportunity to learn from other user groups and bring that experience to ODTUG.

Do you have a principal goal you would like to achieve as a board member?

I would like to make the ODTUG membership more worthwhile.

Please describe the traits, qualities, and experiences that qualify you to serve on the ODTUG Board.

I am already a seasoned Board member, no need for an introduction whatsoever, I can keep the flow going.
Seniority and my experience in other conferences is surely a benefit to the ODTUG organisation.

Campaign Statement

I believe I would bring value to ODTUG. As a passionate volunteer, I have led the new Modern Application Development Stream for ODTUG Kscope for the past two years and have spoken at many of the 10 ODTUG Kscopes I’ve attended.

A seasoned user group volunteer and leader who brings experience to your board, I have worked with Oracle technology for 25 years and always in a partner context, giving me hundreds of customer experiences. I have held roles as support manager, developer, discoverer lead and set up the BI practice within Fujitsu when Oracle discovered the jewels that were the analytics within Siebel and their Hyperion acquisitions. I then spent time as a financials consultant and then partner manager working with Oracle on everything from SPARC chips to applications, giving me a full portfolio understanding. I believe that what I excel at most is the interlock between technology and business and the value of both sides.

I love to learn and then to share that knowledge and encourage others to do the same.

I stood for election last year but was unsuccessful. That is ok, it was a great group to choose from and I have no doubt that it will be the same this year. If elected, I will champion opportunities for everyone to learn more from each other, for new people to share their knowledge—as encouraged by those more seasoned—and for EVERYONE to be encouraged to speak and to enter our community at the grassroots level.

Biography

As an Oracle ACE Director since 2008, I have spoken on many different topics at over 200 conferences worldwide, including the last 15 Oracle OpenWorlds. I have written many whitepapers and blog about my experiences and thoughts http://debrasoracle.blogspot.com.

I have recently joined Inoapps. Not just an Oracle Partner but also an End User Organization. I champion the technology that sits beneath the applications and how we can extend the solution through the Platform portfolio, including development, integration, and analytics. I am a chartered director, a UK professional body responsible for the governance of companies.

Questions

How would you describe ODTUG in 10 words or less?

A real community that learns and cares together.

What is your motivation for joining the board?

ODTUG and Kscope has always been where I have learnt and kept up with trends with Oracle technology and influence product development.

What attributes do you feel you would bring to this position?

Experience with other user groups and community building.

Do you have a principal goal you would like to achieve as a board member?

Champion cross-track content. We never use a product in isolation. Widening our scope at an understanding level makes us better at what we do. Encourage more people to share their knowledge.

Please describe the traits, qualities, and experiences that qualify you to serve on the ODTUG Board.

I have more than 25 years of experience in Oracle. As a passionate believer in user groups, I have been an active volunteer for 20 years. I am still a volunteer and a past president of UKOUG. I have volunteered at ODTUG Kscope for many years, often as ambassador or assisting with tracks. I petitioned for a return of middleware development and last year led the Modern Applications Development track that housed this. Under the global user group community, I led the group that worked with Oracle on behalf of all user groups during the design of Fusion Applications. I have presented all over the world on Oracle, authored several whitepapers, and am a guest blog author for Oracle.
